QA Anime
The world of animation has a lot to offer just about anyone. Of course children are the primary watchers of cartoons and such but there is more to this art form than just the standard cartoons on Disney or Nickelodeon. One of the branches of using cartoon characters to express a storyline is through anime. You may not be entirely familiar with this type of art work and if you are not, you are definitely missing out. Most anime is appealing to all ages. In fact the very word is derived from animation but you can find this niche in movies, comic books and even graphic novels. If you have always been interested in this art form or even if you are new to the anime club, you may have some questions. This article can answer some of them for you.
What is anime?
Anime is a type of cartoon that is hand drawn or computer animated. In Western cultures this type of animation is a relatively new concept that has garnered vast audiences through its appeal. It is interesting to note that in Japan the word itself means "animation" though not all drawings are animated. You can find this form of art work in comics, panels and even in Manga. The style is very distinct and usually easily recognizable. It has proven to be very versatile and you can find it in most genres of fiction.
How are character designs different in anime?
The first thing you will notice about anime characters is the proportions. Typically the heads tend to be larger than the rest of the body. The eyes will be exaggerated and will change shapes to match the character's words or expressions. This is true of all cartoon characters but with anime it is pronounced. The mouth on the character will be opened very wide when speaking so it almost comes across as everything being yelled. You do have to keep in mind that character designs vary so what one anime designer uses, another may not.
When did this art form become a hit in countries outside Japan?
Anime truly did not become a cultural sensation until the 1980's. Thanks to animators in Japan that produced Gundam, Robotech and even some of your favorite Saturday morning cartoon series such as Speed Racer, Western countries began to really take note of this form of design. The cultural following was very small at first and was almost a cult classic. But as more people were introduced to anime, the following grew. Now most people have watched a few animated programs and some are even devout fans of this art form.
Are there books that are converted over to manga or anime?
Yes, there are books that have been converted into manga or anime. Sherrilyn Kenyon is a New York Best Times author that is now converting many of her characters and story lines into manga. Fans of her work now get the chance to see their characters in cartoon form. The one thing to remember about manga comics is that it is read differently than traditional comics. Traditional comics and graphic novels are read from left to right beginning at the first page of the book. Manga, on the other hand, starts at the back of the book and reads from right to left. It can be confusing at first but once you get the hang of it, it becomes much easier.
