Avoiding Credit Card Scams
Imagine the following situations:
- Somebody rummages through your rubbish to find discarded bills and then uses your account numbers unlawfully.
- A shop keeper keeps a copy of your credit or debit card and then uses it to pay for other transactions.
- A mailing asks that you call a long distance number to make claims a free prize. You are told to provide your account number to enroll. You do so and are billed for transactions you never made.
Credit card fraud is a huge industry costing buyers and card companies many millions of pounds annually. It is a type of burglary that is much more discrete than standard theft. Even though it is hard to fully stop card crime from occurring, there are steps you can take to reduce your chances of changing into a victim.
Guard Against Fraud
These are some tips you can take to help in protecting yourself from card fraud.
Do:
- Sign the back of your cards as quickly as they arrive.
Carry your cards separately from your wallet. - Keep your account numbers, expiry dates and company phone numbers and addresses in a safe place.
- Watch your card even though it is out of your sight during a exchange and try to get it back fast.
- Destroy inaccurate receipts and all carbons.
- Compare bills with your monthly billing statements.
- Open your bills and reconcile your account monthly.
- Report dodgy activity or charges rapidly and in writing to your card company.
- Notify your card provider ahead of a change of address.
Don't:
- Lend your card to anybody.
- Leave your cards or your bills scattered around where others might find them.
- Sign blank receipts. If there are blank spaces on an invoice, draw a line thru them.
- Write your account number on the outside of an envelope or on a postcard.
- Give your account number over the phone, unless you made a call to a company you have faith in. If you've got a question about a corporation examine it with your local consumer protection office.
Report Losses and Fraud
If your card is stolen or lost, report this straight away to the issuer instantly. Many companies have free emergency numbers specifically for such calls. By law, you haven't any further responsibility for unapproved charges after you've reported it. Calling quickly will cut back your responsibility for unapproved charges, and will help the card provider to catch the fraudster or block the transactions, making life tougher for the crooks.
