Measured by offensive power and latent capacity to destoy, the most powerful of the WW II ships are the US Navy's Essex class attack carriers. The Lexington was credited with over 1.000 enemy planes destroyed, and 1 million tons of shipping sunk.
By tradtional criteria, the battleships were sovereign, and the culmination of that class were the two Japanese super-wagons, Yamamoto and Musashi, whose size and displacement are closer to the USN's attack carriers than to similar battlewagons, even the Iowa class. They never had thd opportunity to deploy, so there striking power was never measured, but the ruggedness of the design showed up in the amazing amount of the blows Yamamoto took in aerial bombs and torpedos.
